I’ve dealt with the problem for a year or so now, stretching and compression sleeves have worked well. Until recently, the pain has gotten really bad and I haven’t even played golf, I’m a basketball coach, have a young son, and am generally very active. Basic activities like picking up my son or shooting a basketball are very painful right now, so I made an appointment for today and am getting a shot.

For those of you who have had a cortisone shot for your elbow, how long does it take to work? Is there any pain or down time associated with the shot or will I be fine right away? How long does it last?

Thanks guys, consider this my first step towards becoming old! (Im 33)

Never had it in elbow but I had one for shoulder. Turns out I had a torn rotator cuff but the cortisone injection still gave me about 6 weeks relief. I’d say it took about 3 days to fully feel the effect. Got better each day until it was nearly gone.

Mine took less than a week . Continue the ice, stretching and rest for a month . Then strengthen the area with specific exercises found online. Those exercises need to become part of your fitness regime going forward. I still wear strap when working and playing. Hang in there.

Good to know. I do all the exercises but obviously need to be more diligent about it.

I’m supposed to play tomorrow with an out of town relative so hopefully I can suck up the pain for the day and grind my way through it

I had some shoulder issues and had about 4 cortisone shots.

They're kind of hit or miss.

The first one gave me relief for a few months.

The second didn't work at all.

The third game me relief for about a month.

The fourth one has lasted for about 4 or 5 years. I'm not sure if the pain going away had anything to do with the shot or if it just magically went away.

During the middle of all of this, I had an MRI which didn't show anything too unusual.

Unfortunately, I know way too much about elbow tendonitis. Have fought it in both elbows, both lateral and medial, for the last several years.

In my experience, one cortisone shot isn't a terrible idea; however, please understand that the cortisone doesn't heal the overall problem. It will only conceal the pain. That being said, the relief comes pretty quickly after the shot -- usually within 24-48 hours you are good to go. Duration is variable, depending upon the severity of the underlying damage. My first shot lasted several months.

If I had it to do over again, I would not have gotten either of the two cortisone injections that I had. I would instead start with a PRP injection which will actually accelerate the healing process, and follow up with an aggressive PT regimen. With cortisone, you are actually stunting the healing process. The major issue with PRP is that it is not covered by traditional insurance.

Regardless, in order to truly heal your issue, you need to commit to a PT regimen that includes stretching and friction massage in order to truly address the core problem. Tendons take a while to heal because they don't get a lot of blood flow. Patience is your friend when trying to heal elbow tendonitis. It is a long process.

Thanks for the advice. I hit it pretty hard with therapy, stretching, and strengthening when I first started experiencing it about a year ago. It worked well and unfortunately it seems like I just got too relaxed with it since the pain was mostly gone and I let it come back. The injection is to get the pain and swelling gone so that I can get back to an aggressive PT and strengthening routine and this time make myself stay on it even after it’s healed so it doesn’t come back

Unfortunately I have had too many of these shots.

Word of advice, the shot will relieve the pain, but can weaken the tendon.

Don't go play golf right away.

Thanks

My appointment got moved to next week so we will see how this goes tomorrow. I put KT tape on and it helped a lot when I have that and the compression sleeve. Maybe I can start my rehab and won’t need the shot. Fingers crossed

I’ve had it in both elbows and echo what LJB has said. Shot will only be temporary. I went through months of PT and also had ASTYM and dry needling. It’s a long road
