yea im posting from my laptop now. And yea the ethernet/cat5 is going from my comp to the xbox

I click on configure network on the xbox and there is an IP address right there. It says i can manualy give it a static address.

Usually you need a crossover cable to go from pc to pc.

I've done it with CAT5 plenty of times.
Now, keep trying the network test in Xbox. It should be able to pull the DNS settings from the laptop.
Also, the laptop is set to automatically obtain settings, correct?
Also, what antivirus do you have? If there is an internet security component, it might have to be disabled.
Also, a good thing to test is disabled the firewall on the laptop.

It is set to auto obtain settings. I have norton virus deal and how do you disable the firewall
