Xbox external storage

My son has run out of room on his Xbox S. We bought him an external hard drive but now seeing it will only store and you can’t play directly from it. How difficult is it to move games back and forth. Should we just try to go ahead and get an expansion card instead?

I use an external drive. It is very simple to move games back and forth.
ETA: I don't see the value in the expansion drive, but some people swear it's worth it.
