Why do they want gamma settings so dark?

Start a new game and it says adjust the gamma until you can't see (or can barely see) the logo. I follow the instructions because I don't want to cheat and see things I'm not supposed to or something. Then the game is too dark and I get annoyed enough with it that I go turn gamma back up even though I can clearly see that damn logo. Then it's great, it's like I went from black and white to color. Why do they want their games so dark and dingy?

Helps give you the most accurate/realistic colors that the Devs want.

Perhaps your TV brightness is on the darker side already?

I swear current gen games love them some crushed blacks. I suspect these games are designed with HDR displays in mind.

I have an ASUS VP248GQL monitor. It's the same problem on a Samsung tv with a console. It shouldn't matter because the settings are adjusted according to whatever monitor you're already on, but then it's still too dark. Not only do they assume everyone has HDR but that we all game in hermetically sealed pitch dark movie theaters and that things like windows and lights don't exist.
