What do component cables do for the Wii if it doesn't support HD?

thinking about getting one for my mom for Christmas and wondering if i need to pick up a set for it.

lets you use 480p instead of 480i

not an earthshattering graphical improvement but it exists

With HDTVs sometimes they have a problem upscaling 480i and in doing so cause a lag to your Wii.. my cousin had to get the component cables to run it at 480p in order to get rid of the lag.

Actually, 480p is a huge step up over 480i. It doubles the resolution on the screen.
