Awesome thread and discussion. Now I want to go back and play Prime. I kinda got away from gaming when the 2nd came out so I never revisited this series after the 1st one. Think I'm gonna have to buy Echoes off amazon and dust off the Gamecube.
I have beaten Super Metroid probably 20 times and is one of my favorite games ever. Metroid Prime is one of those games that you remember the very first time you play it. I remember my 15 year old self first firing it up wondering how the hell am I going to play a Metroid game in 3d with all of the secrets and hidden items out there. Any where I look could be a missile powerup or an energy tank in a rock. It was so overwhelming at first being in this world with secrets everywhere and looking through Samus visor, and thats not even considering how the Morphball was going to work.
Like everyone has said, the way they transitioned from 2d to a 3d world was incredible and perfect.
Don't remember the area too well but was anyone else always freaked out when you had to go through that area and it would get dark and the space pirates would keep appearing everywhere chasing you. Maybe it was after going underwater?

totally replicated the experience for me even with 20 years of 3d console games in between playing Mario 64 and Metroid prime. I've been chasing that dragon for a long time so it was satisfying to get that feeling from a game again

To this day, Metroid Prime is one of the best games I've ever played. The isolation was pure genius. I loved prime 2 as well, the boss battles were brutal in that game.

Metroid Prime 1 as far as I've seen, has never gone below a 9.7 on any gaming site I've ever been to.
It's definitely the best game I think Nintendo has ever conjured up to this day. Metroid Prime is such a great final boss as well. Very tough to beat especially on first try. Just about lost my mind trying to find all those God damn artifacts.
It was scary as shite sometimes too. I don't think there is a FPS that even touches the standard set by it.
Maybe I'm just a Nintendo homer but frick that game was flawless.

No, it's a perfect game.

I like Echoes more than Prime. Prime is awesome, but I'm becoming more and more jaded against "grass/sand/hot/cold" game paradigms. Then again, I'm becoming a bit jaded against light world/dark world tropes too.
Whatever, they're both terrific IMO.

The soundtrack has only been mentioned a couple times in this (excellent) thread, but it bears mentioning that Prime has the greatest musical score of any video game, ever.
