Please correct me if i am wrong, but PCI Express 2.0 is only relevant if you have a SLI/Crossfire setup. MEaning you don't need to have a PCIe 2.0 slot to run a single card. It is something that prevents bottlenecks due to having two cards.
ETA:
I don't know if the 2.1 changes anything, but I would do some research before taking it back.
It is still 16x

Eh, I was on there the past few days but yesterday and today the Aggies have made it terrible

i have no idea what you just said.
the only thing i know from my research right now is the computer has a pci express x16 slot. the 2.0 and 2.1 are backwards compatible. but the x16 slot has a data limit of 250Mb/s. 2.0 has a 500Mb/s limit. so i'm guessing the slot will choke the graphics card i wanted to put in it.

There is no problem running a 2.0 card in a v1.0 slot. There is no performance loss.

sweet
but what did you mean by this...

SLI and Crossfire is any setup where you have 2 videocards hooked up in parallel at one time.
2 ATi cards = Crossfire
2 NVidia cards = SLI
Most mobos today with come with 2 PCIe slots, meaning you can connect two video cards and utilize both of them at once. The problem with PCIe 1.1 x16 slots is that you cannot get the full "power" from both cards. PCIe 2.0 solves this problem.
ETA:
This isn't relevant to you because you only have 1 PCIe slot.

You are not incorrect about the differnet bandwidths.
However, the card you want to get does not fully "saturate" the PCIe 1.0 16x. So a 2.0 slot is technically not necessary.
Higher end cards may be limited by this, but yours will not be.

how do you know this? what does the card info say that verifies this?

well there is no specific info, but I have googled enough similiar questions to figure it out.
Here is a response to one of those questions:
The new mobo has a PCIe 2.0 port.
ETA:
Also your PCI slot may even be 2.0. The specs for that mobo are not very specific, making me think that it could be either a 2.0 or 1.1. All it says is PCIe 16x.
Here is a response to one of those questions:

All I have with old mobo and new mobo in regards to score is Unigine Benchmarks.

i have no idea what those specs mean, but i'll take your word for it. i still don't know about this computer. i thought for 290 it might have been a deal but it seems like it might be more trouble than it's worth. i really appreciate all the info taylor.

He is testing a slighty higher end card than you on the same exact computer but with 2 different mother boards...one with a PCIe 1.1 and one with a PCIe 2.0. The results are nearly identical.
As far as I am concerned, you can just do what you planned on doing. Buy a new power supply and card. You should be fine.
I would however recommend a better power supply as far as quality.

Never ever go to BB to buy computer hardware, let alone their brand.
Cooler master ain't a bad brand, but they also offer higher end products. You don't need a high end power supply, but a little higher end than you are looking at.
Stick to Newegg like you planned on.

i just had a coworker tell me about what your were trying to tell me and basically what he said you were trying to say was that the card i wanted wouldn't have maxed out the 2.0 slot in the first place. correct?
