Droid = Dumb name used by Verizon.. because the "software" you speak of is actually an operating system.. by google.
They just decided from the very beginning to just call all of their Operating Systems some kinda of desert, and the updates always follow the season as well. If the update comes out around Christmas - Gingerbread, if it comes out during the summer time - FroYo.
ETA: Just call your device an "Android" device from now on, instead of a "Droid".

I stand corrected. Best friend of mine just bought the Bionic so he has a spare DX should I end up bricking my phone. I might be ready to root...maybe.

The SIM is a hardware thing.. wont change anything about the software that you root.
