I just solved my first case on homicide. Is there actually anything to do outside of the dispatch calls besides the main missions?

After you get into homicide, exit to the main menu, select missions (scroll at "resume"), and you should have access to Free Roam in whatever is between traffic and homicide. There are a bunch of cars on the map you can find, you get calls over the radio as soon as you finish one, so you get to level up and drive some interesting cars.
Think there are 4 kinds of side missions. Had to box a burglar, try to save a suicide jumper, a few gunfights...and some others.

this. If you've collected evidence that contradicts what they're saying choose lie. If you know they're lying but cant prove it choose doubt.
Cant wait to ge off work to play. GF will be gone all week, so I should be able to run thru this bitch pretty quick

Small Spoiler about first traffic case
On some occasions I have real trouble connecting the lie with the evidence. For example in the first traffic case I was interviewing Margaret Black, she was truthful on the first five questions. However, she lied about the picture of her husband...the proof? There was a note by his mistress written on the back of the photo once you take it out the frame. How does that prove she was lying? You'd have to know that she was aware of the back of the photo. It is silly.
"Hey Mrs. Black what can you tell me about the photo of your husband in his room?"
"Not much."
"You're a liar, because there is a secret note from his mistress on the back of the photo!"
There is no connection.
There are other similar situations. I may be over thinking things, but doubt and lie are rather tricky at times.

Oh damn, I didn't even get that far. Juat looked at the pic and moved on. Guess I need to be a little more thorough in my investigations.
How'd you open the frame? Just use L til it vibrates then zoom in?

I know exactly what you mean. The accusations and the proof of those accusation is disconnected. I thought the exact same thing when I did that case.
Because I noticed that, I wasn't sure if selecting lie and the note behind the picture as evidence was going to work, because she may not know about the note. So it threw me off.

In that instance you just hit X.
Everything I pick up I move the shite out of the analog stick all while pounding x. I am sometimes too thorough

I think (hope) y'all are just overthinking things. Of course, w/ my shoddy detective work I never came across these issues

Haha I'm working on it. I was actually gonna ask everyone how long they think the game is. Without trying to give anything away, on the 360 version I have gotten through about 2 homicide cases (I think) and it's already asked me to switch discs. It felt like it went by really quickly...anyone else get there yet?
And yeah, there's some witnesses where I get all 3 questions right and I'm like alright sweet startting to figure this out. Then I get 1/4 on the next dude. But yeah, I find that it's petty obvious if they're lying because they look away a lot.
And I think this is such a great game purely because of the detail. I love every little thing from the notebook to all the clues to the awesomeness of every single person having detailed facial expressions.
Oh and

detailed facial expressions.
This
The motion capture technology they used for facial expressions is state of the art & really captures the essence of interrogation.
As the game progresses I assume determining lies will become more difficult. Right now if they touch their face or don't make eye contact it's pretty obvious they are lying. When you get to later missions it'll be tougher to determine lies and you'll need to look for less obvious tells.

Yeah, the face cap technology is pretty impressive. When you talk to a POI and you can immediately recognize him as another actor from Mad Men, it is pretty good.
Think the woman from Kansas with the Southern accent may have been Peggy Olsen outside of the bar.

There are 2 other characters from Mad Men.
One is the bartender at Ray's Bar, and the other I haven't seen in the game yet.

Yeah, the facial recognition tech is really impressive. I found myself at one point staring at the detail of it and realized that I wasn't paying attention to what they were actually saying

yo dude.
due to a recent discovery of whoreness i find myself with a little too much extra time on my hands as of late.
i still play BLOP's hard 1-2 hours a night but am looking for something to keep me busy on the weekends.
why should i get this game?

Well its obviously a big (but great) change of scenery from the FPS multiplayer shooters.
It really challenges you mentally with the interrogation/interview process because it is up to you to figure out who done it based on the evidence that you collect for each case and the ridiculously lifelike facial animations that they used for each character.
The story so far has been compelling and the atmosphere is fantastic. They nailed the 40's decade. Especially when it comes to cars, music, clothes, and Noire-esque cinematic feel.
And when you aren't working on cases you are free to roam the city finding various landmarks, film reels and cars all as collectables if you are a completionist like me.
The story line alone is quite lengthy and if you add the time it takes to find everything else you are looking at a game well worth the $60 price tag.
So if you are looking for a game to play on during the weekend I don't think you could go wrong. To me, nothing is better than popping a huge dip in while vegging out to this great single player experience.
