The story was done in a super ham fisted way. They could’ve made Abby join Joel and Ellie in the beginning of the game and travel with them, so that you get to know her as a character, then have her inexplicably murder Joel and reveal her reasoning, giving you some kind of moral dilemma of who’s side is justified in their actions. Instead, the first thing you learn about Abby is that she kills Joel, making most people not give a shite about her or her motivations because Joel is a beloved character. They also made Abby look fricking ridiculous. I get it, she became obsessed with becoming stronger after what happened to her father, but even weight training like crazy wouldn’t give a woman the ridiculous man physique she has. Gameplay wise, part 2 is an improvement over the original in every way, but the story could have been executed MUCH better.

Maybe, but this is not a change I would want.

What you laid out is a fairly boilerplate, contrived, ho hum betrayal narrative. One that removes and/or deadens any shock value in favor of a soap opera triangle. One that fails to actually put you in the shoes of Ellie's anger and rage. Which was almost assuredly the point of that decision. To make the player feel as angry, confused, and rage-fueled as she felt....and it clearly worked!

Seeing as TO THIS DAY so many cant get over the sudden death of Joel.

Much like Ellie, who became consumed with rage and wanted to lash out and see hurt anyone that had a role in taking Joel away from her....much like fans that made literal death threats to Druckmann and the voice actress playing Abby. And at the end of the day most of these changes have one thing in common: they attempt to lessen the blow of Joel's death and/or remove the anger brought on by it's suddenness.

A changed narrative where you learn of Abby's plot before the moment, or immediately attempt to humanize her, is simply a cop-out to remove some level of the emotional impact of Joel's death, and completely neuters the ability to place the player into the same headspace as Ellie following the event.
