The Long Dark...Can't Get Over the Hump

I'm trying to get over the ten day hump.
I can't do it. Even if I luck out and grab a hatchet and knife early,I still end up dying about day 5.
Love this game and I'm streaming it on Twitch, but when I see these guys on interloper (I play stalker) just crushing it, I have to ask myself, "How?"
I know map knowledge is key and i've only had the game two days, but still...
So any tips other than pick up sticks and survey everything?

probably map knowledge, the camp office and prepper cache by the railroad in the middle of mystery lake are generally good places to start
i tend to make that camp office and the forestry lookout point thats pretty close to it my "home base" early in the game

I remember I got that game pretty early and it was a lot easier. You didn’t have to manually find firewood etc. I made a homebase in one of the lakeside cabins in coastal highway and got up to day 60.
