Galaxies was never that great, but the major "dumbing down," as you describe it really killed it. It was incredibly tedious and difficult before, then it became mind-numbingly easy and unsatisfying like Guild Wars. The irony is that Sony thought they were salvaging their user base by removing the learning curve.

The game did need revamping, but not to the extent that they turned it into child's play. I think Bioware is making a mistake in allowing players to become jedi without any prerequisites (another downfall of the Galaxies update), unless there is some yet to be announced balancing to give incentive for other classes. I can imagine there will be a ton of bounty hunters, at least.

The thing about Galaxies was that it was like "Take everything boring about your real life... and do all of the same boring shite in a galaxy far far away!" I hate MMOs that make you do boring, repetitive shite to accumulate money.

But that's also what made it awesome. You could do whatever you wanted. It just needed an overhaul and they went the wrong way with it.

I was thinking the same thing. What is to happen in PVP? I'm guessing Everyone of the same level will be pretty much equal to each other, which is BS, I think. A jedi should just own everything else. Unless you are just a wimpy jedi (which have been written in some SW novels...) but who wants that? I would be ticked if my Sith gets ganked by a smuggler.

there is still much to learn from this game. God, I hope they do it right.

You guys are missing the point on the Jedi Knight.

Each of these classes have roles. The Jedi Knight character will be very much like the tank. They have Bounty Hunters and Smugglers, Spies, Consulars, etc., all having different roles to play.

They've already said that they are going to be balancing the classes as much as possible, so yes, a storm trooper will be able to kill a Jedi Knight. The Jedi Knight isn't going to be pretty much invincible like it was in SWG.

Personally, I think I'm going to enjoying being a Consular or Inquisitor a bit more than a JK.

I really recommend you guys reading up on the game at SW:TOR

Smuggler is really more suited to my play style.

And I'm not saying each class won't have its own distinct role in combat. Just that the novelty of playing as a jedi will thin the ranks of the other classes, no matter how much demand there is for other roles to be filled. Hopefully people will eventually grow tired of always having to compete with other jedi for team spots and equipment and flock to the non-force wielding classes.

Me too. or inquisitor

i'm very curious to learn about crafting. I guess it can kind of go the regular route of weaponsmith (blasters, thermal grenades) herbalism (med packs), etc etc...

As long as they have non-instanced player housing, I'll be playing SW:TOR for a long time, I imagine.

A neat concept that has been absent from MMOs, for some reason. The social aspect falls by the wayside usually. The Guild Wars guild houses are virtually worthless.

Only MMO's to implement non-instanced player housing has been UO and SWG.

"Instanced" means that the area you are playing in is limited to you/your immediate party, so you can't interact with other players. Non-instanced housing means that you actually socialize with other players in the jedi temple or wherever it is you reside rather than solely npcs.

So it's just kinda like a place to virtually hangout without others interupting chat?

Like outside a Bank in WOW without the young douchebags on Trade channel?

Well, you're still going to have a bunch of spamming douches I would suppose. But it is neat to be able to make e-friends with people you're gonna be neighbors with rather than chatting with random passers by in a large city.

Well, in SWG, they went so far as to implement a player-run city government. A clan could have a guild hall and town hall that was managed by a player who went down the Government Tree, a medic center that was managed by a player who went down the Doctor tree, merchant tents for players who went down the Business trees, etc.

What was really cool, is that if you had a Town hall, you could name the player-run city and everyone in the game can see it. You could also have space ports that connected your city to the main cities on the planet, So, if you were a merchant, you could have an advertising robot that would tell people the city and coordinates of your tent and find your goods easily.

I bet if you did a search for "player cities SWG", you'd be able to see more of what I mean.

You really didn't have spammers in the player cities, unless they were really popular (generally a city with good merchants would be popular). Everyone pretty much hung out in the canteens, listening and getting buffs from the musicians and dancers.
