Review

Slay the Spire is a rogue-lite / strategy / dungeon-crawler / card game mash-up. While this is right up my alley, I've played a lot of games in this vein that were ambitious, but lacked execution. The gameplay is the best in the business. The deck- building aspect is perfect - easy to learn, but difficult to master. It requires thought, but you're never bogged down. The classes are balanced really well. Slay the Spire IS in early-access. There is more they will be adding, but it already feels like a finished product. I'm completely addicted to this game right now. Everyone, do yourselves a favor and check it out!

At least so far, no micro transactions. That is a big selling point for a card game to me.

Good point. From what I've read of interviews with the developers (told you I was hooked), it seems very unlikely that they'll ever go this route. As it stands now, it already plays like a finished game without anything like microtransactions.

Been watching a guy on YT play and it certainly looks fun. Am I correct that you don't permanently collect cards a la hearthstone? Your deck starts the same every run right?

Yes. There are a few gated unlocks of new cards to be found, but your deck always starts the same.

There aren't a lot of chances to transform cards. Honestly, it's usually not all that beneficial because so many cards are only good in certain types of decks. I don't want to give too many tips because it's a lot of fun figuring it out on your own, but I will say that it helps to be very selective with your card choices once you figure out a few strategies that work. Also, remove a strike or defend at just about every shop. It's worth the cost because it helps you cycle through your deck faster and find your key cards.

It doesn't get harder every time unless you start playing in ascension mode (this goes all the way to 15 so it can be extremely challenging), but sometimes everything just comes together perfectly, you have a great run, and then you lose a bunch of games in a row. That's rng for you.

The run-through I won I got a ? Early on that let me transform 3 of my basic strikes immediately which is a lot cheaper and faster than paying to remove them one at a time
