Should I buy a new Playstation?

I have several discs from the PS3 era that I would like to still play.
Can you al tell me the deal for the PS4 and PS5? Can they play old PS3 games? I have read that you have to download the games on the newer systems to play them and none of the new systems are backwards compatible? I really have no desire to play the new games made for PS5. But my PS3 doesn't work. So Can I just buy an old PS3 and be ok?

Ps3 is about $100.
PS4 is anywhere from $150 to $300. It's not backwards compatible.
Ps5 is $400 or $500 depending on the model.

PlayStation 5s are almost impossible to get and are not backward compatible with ps3 games.
