Mercenaries came in the Lost Dungeons of Norrath expansion which is around when I quit. I started right as Luclin launched.

Loved EQ to death, helped shape my love for gaming. That being said I would never go back. The memories are there and I'm fine with that. There were so many mechanics that's just don't make sense, the gaming world has evolved so much in the last 20 years.

I'm really enjoying playing Elder Scrolls Online right now - its a very anti-WoW MMO in play style and appearance.

I had a lvl 55 paladin. Man I use to love EQ. But I feel they tinkered too much with it over the years so I gradually stopped playing. The Nexus and the Bazaar ruined it imo. To travel across the world required taking a loooonnng trek or finding a player wizard to teleport you and the East Commons zone organically became the de facto trading zone that people used. It was all so organic until the expanded the game to have dedicated areas for this and you could easily travel anywhere.

The devs did tinker with it too much, trying to make it easy and accepted by the mainstream.

Back in the old days you'd be scared traveling through certain zones like Kith Forest knowing you could get tour arse jumped and it would take a long while to get your body back.

Those kind of memories made old school EQ fun.
