Question regarding physical and digital copy memory on console (Switch primarily)

So, say you have or had a physical copy of the game ie. BotW. If you buy it digitally when your physical copy memory is still on the switch, does the data carry over to that digital copy?
I guess what I’m saying is, when you buy digital, you’re not replacing the save file as much as you’re just adding the entire amount of data needed to run the game without the cartridge....correct?
I know this is probably common knowledge probably but I wanted to make absolutely 100% sure cause dumb shite like that has happened to me and my brother especially before and I have a shite ton of hours on a good bit of Nintendo’s launch and flagship 2017 titles (Odyssey, BotW, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Splatoon etc.)
Outside of some Kickstarter junk goal collectibles and stuff like the Resident Evil 2 remake Collectors Edition, I’m trying to convert all the games I play into straight digital like a lazy douche.
Thanks for the help!

Your save data is not linked to a physical or digital version. You can switch between them without worry.
