Is the standard PS4 ok to use with the VR or do you have to step up to the pro ?
It’s for an 8 year old who doesn’t have a 4K display and will likely be stepping up to the PS5 next year.

It's going to depend on what games your 8 year old will be playing, but I'd say they probably won't care or notice the difference between a standard PS4 or Pro at that age.
My 8 year old and 9 year old love playing Beat Saber, Job & Vacation Simulator, Astrobot, and Moss (to name just a few). Other than Vacation Simulator, which came out semi-recently, they had played every game on a standard PS4 before I stepped us up to the Pro. They didn't even know I had switched to a Pro until I pointed it out to them.
I noticed it, specifically in Skyrim, but they didn't care at all.

I don't know how much it matters one way or the other. I just took the leaped and grabbed one and I have been enjoying it. I have an 8 year old daughter and she loves it as well.

Honestly the jump in VR from OG to pro isn't that much of a difference.
I run on OG PS4 and it's great

If you already have the standard PS4 there is no reason to upgrade due to wanting VR. The VR comes with a box that takes work off the console so you won't see any real gains upgrading for this reason.
