i found a free float 4-rail handguard for my m4 on ebay for $35 about a year ago. it was new and from a small company so if you look hard enough, you can save about $70 - $100 there.
And i bought mine fully assembled but after taking it apart several times for cleaning, buying pieces and assembling one myself would be very easy and much cheaper. i would highly recommend doing that. and there are step by step videos all over the internet for it also

what are the advantages of the free float handguards vs. the drop in/2 piece?
i see those for very cheap and they seem very easy to install

Oh I am. They can put a stop-loss in effect and boom. I'll be stuck with a random separation date that I can't plan for. I want to transition as smoothly as possible.

the free float means that the front part of the handguard doesnt lock in to the front piece by the front sight post. it allows the rails to be perfectly level because there is normally a slope as the handguard goes from wide to thin at the end of the barrel. it is still 2 pieces and they stay in place by locking in to the rear locking ring and then a couple of screws at the front.
do the ones that you are talking about have 2 rails or 4?
and the only hard part about installing those is the locking ring in the back. it can be a real bitch especially if the spring is new and stiff. i didnt buy the special tool to make that easy to do so its a little hard to do just by hand, but it is doable.

just something simple like this:
remember i'm a newb on this, so i'm not gonna understand every term you mention, but i guess i see that the free float rails don't put any undue stress on the barrel itself, but that seems to only be beneficial for people shooting for accuracy at long ranges

those look the exact same as the ones i got. most of the ones i found back then were around 100-120. but like i said mine was only 35 and they work great.

those are only 40, but they aren't free float from what i understand

well im not completely sure what that term means but i believe thats what mine were listed as. but those look exactly like mine. there are a lot of ar-15 forums and the people there are usually very helpful about any questions you might have and recommendations on quality parts for cheap prices

what do you have yours blinged out with?

i only have a grip-pod and a bunch of rear sights sights ( detatchable carry handle, flip up, red dot, and a tactical scope with adjustable zoom) but i would love to have an EOTech or Trijicon sight but they are kinda expensive

kinda expensive
no doubt
how much did you pay for the grip pod
i saw some for 60, and some for 200, and they looked to be the same, unless one was a knock off
60 sounds way better than 200

i think they are usually around 80 but i got mine from a friend that just got back from a deployment

I have one Croacka. I'll send it to you. It's not exactly in pristine condition but it's free. Hell, I have mags too
