FYI, I know very little about pensions
I work for a company that still has pensions, and to be honest, beside how much goes into my pension each year, i'm not too sure how it works either. Not planning on seeing that money for quite some time.

I see myself changing jobs a good bit in my career so a pension would probably frick me over
Contribute 5 years to retirement you will never see and then leave?

Mine isnt a contribution from my paycheck. It's 5% of my yearly salary and I am full vested after 3 years.

Yeah, but what if you only work there 5 years
You put in from day 1. You leave with whatever you put in. There is no matching. It doesn't grow. Its dollar for dollar, until you retire. Once you hit retirement age, you get a percentage for every year you are vested (3% per year). So, after 33 years, you can leave with 99% of the average of your 3 highest salaries. There is also a 3 year drop, which I'm not sure on the details of that and you get paid for your accumulated sick leave (which they are were trying to stop for all new hires...the vote didn't pass).

So if you leave before retirement age, you just get a cash out of what you put in?
