Reviews seem to think it is underwhelming for gaming

Yeah AMD has kinks to work out but a solid effort. Going with skylake-x for pcie lanes and overclocking headroom though.

8 cores aren't for gaming.
I will go 6 core when they launch, just don't need 8 cores for mild workstation with a side of gaming.

6900k beats 7700k in some newer games. 8 cores is future proofing.

So does Ryzen and within a few FPS in the others. That's the 1700 at 3.9 vs 5ghz 7700k too.

Zelda Breath Of The Wild already up and running all the way to the title and save screen in Cemu emulator.
They think they will have it fully functional within weeks.
PC.

i'm color blind and i'm wearing my glasses that help and I can detect a difference, but I just don't know what it is.
for me, the difference is immaterial whatever it is

I thought you had a WiiU or whatever?
Lmfao I thought it was called the Shift, shows my interest in that thing.

Traded it in for GameStop points in prep for the new switch when it was announced. But ended up buying mine at WalMart. So the GameStop points turned into a waste of time.

I still need a PS4 Pro. Might just wait it out. Besides the Zero Dawn there is nothing of interest.

Horizon is awesome so far (and the best looking console game to date 4K HDR or not), they've been bringing it with games lately but most aren't my taste such as Nioh and the upcoming Nier game.
I did grab Rise of the Tomb Raider on sale, didn't know it had a Pro version so I'll get to that after Horizon and I beat Dishonored 2 on it the other day finally (what a disappointment).
Oh and I'll grab the yearly MLB The Show later this month as a big MLB fan.
My poor Xbone S though, I watch a 4K bluray on it maybe once or twice a month and the rest of the time it collects dust and is useless to me. But that's what I got it for so no complaints, any gaming was just a bonus.

I am a little disappointed in reading some of these gaming performance reviews of Ryzen.
I do more than just gaming on my PC, but gaming is still a big part of what I do in my spare time.
I think I'm gonna wait till Skylake E arrives before I decide if I want to build with Ryzen or not.

Yeah it's a wash. Price/Performance is incredible for multi threaded applications but outside of that it is meh. Not a knock on AMD. They knocked it out the fckking park but CPUs in general are just meh.

Some are good some are bad, there are a lot of inconsistencies out there early on. Best to wait a few weeks in general, even Broadwell had issues early on, it's normal.
Overall it's a very good well rounded 8 core CPU, especially the 1700 for the price. For some reason in benchmarks in games the 1700 is performing the best OC'd at 3.9GHz, and with SMT disabled. SMT is where games are suffering, and something that updates will take care of like early Hyperthreading days.
I never really wanted the 8 core, so I'm fine with waiting until Q2 for the 6 core offerings.
Overall I wanted it to compete across the board with the 6900K, and it does, very well.
Also depends on the games, so many sites test old arse games and there is where you start to get a lot of differences, more cores for gaming is something that is very new and still has a long ways to go before even 6 cores are properly utilized in gaming, so if you look at a new title such as Battlefield 1, a very CPU heavy game but also very well optimized, the 1800X is actually better than a 5GHz OC 7700K WITH much slower RAM and we all know how important RAM speed is now.
and then you have gigantic discrepancies like this:
Appears most of the issues lie with motherboard early BIOS versions. Again, just wait a few weeks or a month for more proper and legit benchmarks. There will be large improvements.
ETA: finally found the 1700 OC results I was talking about against a 5GHz OC 7700K. This is more on par with where all the results will be following some BIOS and software updates.

Oh trust me I will be paying very close attention to the benchmarks in the next month or so as some of the early issues get ironed out.
Still 8 cores for 300-500 is insanely good value.

The 1700 for $329 and 8 cores 16 threads with the performance it offers both in newer games (going forward in the future as well) and workstations is an absolute steal.
