I beat the hinterlands dragon today at level 12.
I tried a few times at 11, but I couldn't seem to make the party cooperate. Once I got everyone's special talent tree, I spec'd Viv into KE healer and Blackwall into champion tank.
Worked great like that although it was pretty rocky. Had one point where I was down to a sliver with nothing but guard keeping me up. Dragon had about 5% and I was ready to throw the controller through the TV but I got the rest of the party up and finished it.
Biggest thing for me was maxing the potion threshold on the rogue bc he wouldn't drink them all.
Running Rogue Archer w/ Cole as assassin, Viv as heals, Blackwall as tank.
I've tried a few other parties including some heavy 2h warrior DPS and mage DPS, but it doesn't even come close. Couldn't take out the level 14 rift with any group, switched back to this "boss" setup and did it with no potions.

I went ahead and finished.
Easily the most enjoyable play through and game I've had since Witcher 2. Also the first time the next gen console really showed what it can do.
There is still so much stuff I didn't do this first run. I didn't even touch the hissing waste, didn't finish the desert with the shard temple, and still had a lot left of emprise de lion. Actually excited for a second play for the first time in a long time.
Great, great game.

I run my dragon battles with two mages. Barrier and Revival are preferred. I need to work on Viv more and get her healing. That never ending blades ability on rogues is legit.

Yeah Cole does some serious dps.
Spec'ing Viv to KE helped my group a lot. Also have Barrier and Revival preferred. She's really good at keeping barrier up when health is low, but not so much when the party is full.
Are you saying both mages have barrier? Haven't thought of that.
I think dps mage would be good if I was running it, but it seems the AI doesn't use spells very efficiently.
Tried making solas rift mage and he's just too fragile and stands in the way. I haven't experimented enough with the defend/follow, but he stand still too much on defend and runs into stuff i'm running away from on follow.

I've found that defend/self in combination with Barrier being the only preferred skill has really helped the situation you describe, at least for dragon fights.
Before finishing my first playthrough last night I took out the high dragon on the western front, and Vivienne's behavior was great. Defend/self with preferred on Barrier and spirit blade.
She stood right on the edge of the fight the entire time casting barrier at Cassandra and Bull. Inevitably, the dragon would eventually jump at her, and she would pull out the spirit blade and do damage until the dragon moved to another part of the battlefield. Then she would stay in place and resume with the barrier, even running just close enough to the action to get barrier on Bull & Cass.
It was the first time I (mage) stood on the outside of the battle just dealing spells, while the other team members did the heavy lifting, and I didn't have to use the tac cam once.
Bull and Cass were both follow/self.
Oh, and keeping the mana threshold around 50% has made a big difference to.

I set threshold to 20%. Perhaps she doesn't have enough mana to keep barrier up. I really don't like the tac cam. I don't have enough patience to mess with it, but I can see how it could help.
Blackwall is a brick house as a tanking spec. If the rest of the people would just stay out of the way I'd be good to go.

Yes, both mages can keep up the barrier. I can get them going back and forth a good bit.

I used it less and less as I leveled higher.
Where it did help alot was dealing combos to generate focus. Alot of fights started in tac cam with Solas freezing an enemy and Blackwall/Cass/Bull running up to shatter.
But eventually I was able to get Solas to do that on his own with freeze/stonefist, my mage with freeze/mind blast, or the warriors with pommel strike/heavy blow or shield bash. I hardly used tac cam at all after that.

It seems like having two mages with Viv being a KE is the way to go.
I've been using a rogue with Cass and Bull, and it has it's limitations. I do like some of the rogue's range attacks that can put people to sleep.

Nice. Do they do a good job of alternating and keeping it up?

I was a mage and I ALWAYS had another one with me. I was specced as KE also.
My group was always mage/tank/rouge/mage or Mage/tank/tank/mage.

I've been using mage/tank/2hand/rogue.
Might switch. It's works well, but I think it forces me to use too many potions.

I feel like my dps as an archer rogue is kinda low, but I've been pretty undergeared. Finally got a purple bow so we'll see how it goes.
ETA: also got a +30% explosive shot ring which will help a ton.
Group dps i think is fine I just don't feel like I contribute a lot because my aoe is weak.

I find they did. Usually the other mage will hit barrier right off the bat. Then I'd manually kick it off again. Sometimes it takes a bit of management but I find it works.

Yeah, you just set the other mages main attack to be barrier, then when it runs out, you cast barrier, then when your barrier is down, the other mage is just about ready to cast.
On normal, 2 mages is almost overpowered. I would imagine on hard, it will be harder to keep both mages alive. I assume they have lower HP and the bad guys hit harder.
I'll still roll dual mages in my replay. I'll try rogue, 1 tank, and Solas and Viv. Really not a fan of rogue, but I hate those damn locked doors.

I always travel with Sera and the way I use her is for her move that puts people to sleep, full draw. It also occasionally one hits enemies.

I really enjoy the archer.. played a hunter in WoW.
FWIW, I haven't found anything of value behind locked doors. Maybe 2 or 3 blues that weren't worth using.
I could use some suggestions on mage dps talents. When i fully invest in a tree, there's a lot of stuff I won't use (fire mines, etc.) and splitting seems like I'll have more spells than mana can support.

Get lightning cage/Immolate for dps
Rift mage for control/weaken debuff/single target nuke/aoe
Spec enough into fire for the critical strike modifiers and into ice for the mana regen
And enough into spirit for the aggro modifier
