That ring is basically just for people seeking a challenge. I've beaten that game thoroughly with so many builds, and I never once touched that ring

Killing Ciaran is the best thing to do. If you give her the souls she gives you her weapons but if you kill her, you he her weapons plus her armor
That's the only time you'll ever see her also. Might as well kill Chester too. And Gwyn is cake after the likes of kalameet. Parry , Riposte, rinse and repeat

There's really not much to NG+; enemies have more HP and do more damage, but you'll destroy everything save for the 4 Kings.

Dark Souls 2 awaits....
Also, you could always do a straight pvp build and experience just doing that. I haven't done it yet but it looks like fun. If you learn to take out bigger, stronger human played characters with no attack pattern, the bosses should be a walk in the park
I'm gonna finish my first play thru on DS2 before going back to the DLC on DS1. By then DS2 will have some DLC out. It just takes me too damn long to finish a game
