Been thinking about playing a few and was hoping to get some thoughts on which to play first.

The three I'm interested in are Octopath Traveler, Lost Sphear and Star Ocean.

I haven't played a lot of these types of games where the combat is turn based (I know Star Ocean isn't turn based but it looks like the other two). I have played the South Park games though (loved them).

So my question is, which order would any of you play these games? If you've played all three, which of these games' mechanics are easiest to pick up? Do y'all have any suggestions for other games like this that I might should look at first?

Thanks in advance.

Octopath's battle system is like Bravely Default's on steroids. It's a lot of fun and there are a ton of different parties you can create due to the nature of the game. If you are very picky about story and characters though, the game may turn you off. With there being 8 different characters and stories, there is hardly any interaction between them. It was a nice idea on paper but was very poorly executed.

Lost Sphear plays out pretty similarly to I Am Setsuna, which both games are tributes to one of the GOAT JRPGs on the SNES, Chrono Trigger. However, neither are on the same level as CT, but still decent games nonetheless. LS is prob better than Setsuna tho.

Star Ocean First Departure R is an updated port of the first Star Ocean game iirc. The battle system is pretty similar to the Tales of games if you've ever played those. Can't say I've ever played it, so can't help much there.

If I had to play these games in a specific order out of interest, I'd prob do Star Ocean > Octopath > Lost Sphear.

I know you didn’t list them but I would look into Xenonlade 2 or Fire Emblem Three Houses, they are the best two on the system IMO.

Xenonlade 2

You can definitely get a lot of playing time out of that game even without the expansion

I love the battle system but I wish there wasn't so much grinding. Takes a good while to beat mediocre enemies in that game

Thanks for the responses so far.

I haven't played Bravely Default, Chrono Trigger or I Am Setsuna, even though I've heard a lot of good things about them. I'm very green on this type of game. From what I've read, Star Ocean is the shortest of the three as well as the cheapest, so that's two points in its favor.

GalvoAg, well I did ask for more recommendations, so I appreciate it. I do have some interest in playing those two games eventually, but I've been in a retro style mood recently which is why I just listed the three that I did.
