Just grabbed a 200GB mini SD (holy crap is incredible how little this is and hold that much storage) and looking to move games over to it. I've got probably 5 archived games currently with save data still is like to move over. My impression from watching a video is that if I redownloaded one of those games now it would go on the card while save data is still on the switch. Anyone done any of this already with some luck? Figured I'd ask before wiping progress on anything unintentionally. TIA

Well there’s 2 scenarios.

1. You have Nintendo Switch online so it doesn’t really matter because it cloud saves just about every important Nintendo game outside I think Mario Tennis and Splatoon. You can click the thumbnail of the game with the start button and go to cloud saves to see if it’s backed up. If it shows your main account and says “backed up!” then you have nothing to worry about.

2. There’s an option where you can go to in settings called internal storage and if you have online, the save data cloud where you can see all save data not on the console, and what data is on either the card or the console itself.

The games’ save files go directly to the system’s native memory. So if you saved files from a cartridge and then you switched to all digital after selling off the games with those same games. The same files will still be there because the game itself isn’t on there, but the save data is. If that makes any sense.

You are right. I just got a micro SD for my switch and read up on it. If you have games on your internal storage, in order to get them on your SD card the only official option is to uninstall and reinstall. Your save data whether you have an SD card or not is forced onto the built in system memory (not including cloud saving). After you reinstall your game on the SD card it will automatically pull save data from the internal memory.

There could be some kind of jailbreaking thing you could do that lets you do some kind of unofficial method, but the uninstall reinstall is all that is supported right now.

I appreciate the breakdown.

Basically what I've done was any game I wanted moved over I Archived (making sure not to delete save data) then redownloaded. Its now showing up as on the card and have 22GB free on the console itself.

Now I've checked where you mentioned and all games besides Pokémon Let's Go, Splatoon, and Fortnite look like they are backed up on the cloud. So I guess I'll live with those being only local.
