Agree. The gameplay sucks for the most part.
If you don't like exploring and reading then those titles aren't for you. I enjoy FO because the world you are put it. Great lore and always something to discover.

Gameplay is nothing special but they did improve it a lot.

Yeah but as you know, that isn't what makes Bethesda games great.
I hated FO4 when it launched. Remember telling a someone at work that Battlefront was the game to get over Fall Out 4. Boy was I wrong.
It took me about 10hrs to really start to love Fall Out again with FO4. After that I racked up 120hrs within 3weeks. It isn't a story driven game but the story is deep and connected, you just need to explore and read to appreciate how great of a world Bethesda built.

It's a very shallow main story with lots of interesting side stories packed in. Typical Bethesda in that way. It's a crappy Fallout title, but a soild game overall. The weapon/armor crafting and enemy AI improvements are outstanding though.
