EA got worse as they got bigger. Before the online era they weren't noticeably worse than any other big gaming company. However as gaming transition to more online, they were among the first big companies to double down hard on things like DRM and microtransactions.
They've pretty much been full blown AIDS for about 15 years now.
In regards to the FIFA games, I'm amazed how much money people drop on these things. Apparently soccer fanatics have absolutely no problem dropping many hundreds if not thousands of dollars every year on add-ons and DLC and other various bullshite for a soccer video game, it's completely asinine.
Part of me can't even blame EA for taking advantage of them. You have all these people willing to just give you millions of dollars for basically nothing, what's a business supposed to do?
I hate EA more than anybody but almost everything they do shitty can be blamed on the consumers that enable them.

The big boom is from streamers, unpacking. Such as that castro dude. He will get 12-20K watching him do ultimate team tourney and unpacking. He spends several thousands weekly. It's a form of gambling, and since you can sell back to others online for points(which buy better players), it becomes a huge gambling market.

Yeah I figured it was something like that. I don't like soccer and certainly not soccer video games but ever now and then I'll read some article or story about some poor fool who's blown thousands on the game and be really confused.
Any lootbox/DLC items that are not bound to your own account after you buy them are 100% straight up gambling.

Once game systems could be connected to the net, EA should have charged you for a Madden game, then the DLC is the year to year update with new players and rosters. Maybe like a subscription once the game was purchased.
