I think the thing I'm appreciating most (though there is plenty to appreciate) is how the pacing is not only structured, but justified. To spare even minor spoilers, I won't go into any detail, but the goal of your "main quest" isn't time sensitive, at least at face value. So as you move along that path, it doesn't feel "wrong" to do random side shite. And Atreus even helpfully (not that I need the nudging) chimes in along the lines of "hey, we can go straight to doing XYZ, or we can explore a bit if you want". Oblivion is one of my all time favorite games, but it always felt fricky to ignore the impending apocalypse to do random chores, rise in guilds, etc. And so many games fall into that trap, because they make the main conflict super time sensitive in theory, and then encourage you to ignore the time sensitive problem for as long as possible. Games like Fallout 1 fix that by putting an actual timer, but that's not really my jam.
As someone who basically never does two main story missions in a row and prefers to go exploring, this is been a really nice balance.

Yes, I will say I agree.
Enjoy your time with the story and exploring.
Imo, it is almost as close to perfect as you can get in a game.

A small channel I follow on YouTube ran it with no GPU. Game performed better than you would think it would.

Also make sure you do all the Valks so you can fight the Valk Queen.
One of the better upgrades for NG+ and plus, it is honestly the only real challenge I had in the game.

Next main story quest is going after the chisel, so I'll be able to after that, but not sure I'm ready for those fights yet. We'll see

They are fine. Each has their own thing, the Valk Queen on the other hand, holy fckk. It tested my styles.
I never beat her in NG+

I notice you keep referencing ng+ as being more difficult. Is there something inherent to it that is more difficult, or did you pump up the difficulty? Most games are easier in ng+.

It depends, but in this case they have more hit points and damage, I believe.
All your gear is nearly useless in NG+. You get new gear.

Progressed far enough in the main quest (EfH) to unlock the final dwarven favor. Knocked that out, and now have some sexy Sindri armor. Plan for tomorrow is to knock out Olrun (she will be my third kill, but the first to drop armor), then start messing around in Muspelheim and build up to that Valkyrie fight. Then Nilfheim to follow that.

Valkyrie down. Muspelheim trials done (first two tiers) and Valkyrie down. On to Niflheim…
ETA: Did some grinding, got full (not upgraded) Ivaldi's and opened a couple of chests. I'll come back tomorrow and see if I can manage to upgrade my armor to the point that I'm comfortable taking on the Valk.

Ok, end game Muspelheim fricking sucks. Forcing me to waste fifteen minutes redoing three extremely easy “impossible trials” every time I want to do one hidden trial to get resources for armor upgrades is not, at all, an enjoyable gameplay loop. Farming Niflheim was infinitely more interesting.
Eta: Sigrund. fricking. Downed. Her health well combined with her sheer variety of attacks (I believe every single other Valk attack?) made her a hell of a challenge. Though I’m proud to say that after several hours of grinding away at her, on the run I killed her, I didn’t use a res stone.

Alright, final verdict:
It’s an incredible game. Anyone considering it should just make the jump. The graphics and scenery are beautiful. The gameplay is fluid and well paced. And the writing and story were excellent, which I frankly wasn’t expecting. I’ll definitely be buying Ragnarock when it drops on Steam.

It is nearly perfect. It also pushed the Pros graphics at the time.
You are right about pacing, that might be it's strongest part.

I can see it making the pro scream. The open spaces, particularly on the lake, killed my cpu (just a 3600). When I upgrade my cpu in a few months, I’ll be inclined to do a ng+ towards the end of the year (or maybe early next year) in preparation for Ragnarock.
I think my biggest complaint is that the final battle was almost comically easy compared to other fights in the game. It was longer, but I honestly didn’t find it markedly more difficult than a Traveler fight. It couldn’t hold a candle to a Valk fight, much less Sigrund.
Oh, and to reiterate: endgame Muspelheim fricking sucks

You know what Santa Monica Studios needs to bring back to GoW? Kratos sex minigames. Currently replaying GoW3 and totally forgot that banging Aphrodite is a thing.
