As a fan of square and FF games, not having a random battle-turn based system made the game not even worthy to be in the FF family
I can understand this. Although I liked it, I felt the gambit system kind of retained a turn based feel.
I have NO idea why the push is always away from turned-based to real time. If I want real time, I'll play an action game dammit, I want an RPG.
Thats why I couldn't stand 13.

Get it. It will last you several dozen hours and has an enjoyable story. Battle system is one of my favorites for a FF game. Definitely worth the small price you will pay for it.

I hated 13 as well, I felt it was far to big of a departure from the old school battle systems and the story and amount of play time (two of my favorite things about FF games) were both extremely disappointing. 12 on the other hand gives you the same experience of older games but without random encounters and you can choose how involved the battles are. I set relatively few gambits because I was used to the old games where you control every command so to me it didn't seem like a great departure from 10.

I think the push away from turn based is that people view battles and just pushing the attack button and waiting.
Sure, moving to real time kind of addresses that. But I think the better answer is to just make the battle system more complex, nuanced, and strategic. Get rid of the scrub random encounters and make each enemy unique and challenging.
Unfortunately square is too in love with flashy to be that focused on gameplay these days.
