Previously I had posted about wanting to get my son a desktop for his 16th birthday. Budget was $2500. In doing research I feel like I might be doing some overkill.
I'm wanting to get him setup with a 2k setup.
It looks like building is just a mess right now because graphics cards are just crazy expensive and hard to come by right now.
So what I've come up with is a prebuilt system. Tell me if this is too much/overkill. I don't wanna be spending money I just don't have to.
Ryzen 7 3700x
GE Force RTX 3070
16 GB Ram 3200 megahertz (2 8GB DDR 4)
480GB SSD
2TB HD
Dell S2721DGF 27"
IPS QHD with freesync and G-Sync
He plays Apex/Fortnite/Black Ops/Battlefront 2
This is a CLX unit if anyone has any reviews on them.

It's definitely not a cheap hobby but it's not overkill if it's one of his biggest hobbies.
$2500 and those specs are a great start for a 16 year old. He'll likely want to add to it over the new few years which can get pricey.
I'm at around 5k over the span of 3 years.
The way I'd look at your son's situation is that a bunch of his friends are gonna drop a stacks of cash on flashy car stuff while his version of that is a PC.

Yeah he bought himself a 01 Jeep for 3k back in September. He's not a car, hunting, fishing kid. He does computers and band. He is the definition of a nerd.

To be fair, the founders edition graphics cards are at historically good performance to price value. That being said, you are absolutely right that you have to damned near kill a hobo to get one.

Yep. I paid $300 over market value to get a 3080 in December because the stocks won't be replenished until at least April.
