Book gave a lot of interesting insight into the people who worked at id and the development of their games from pre Commander Keen up to the beginning of Doom III.
Hadnt really heard of Ion Storm's games Daikatana and Anachronox before reading this book (may have seen ads for them, box art looks familiar).

John Romero left id after Quake 1 came out and formed Ion Storm. Daikatana was supposed to come out in the fall of 97 and basically be Half Life before Half Life. Ads said that Romero would make us his bitch and to "suck it down." It finally came out in 2000 (first on N64, oddly) and predictably flopped.
Anachronox was a solid console-style RPG. It took forever to come out too.

Great book. I remember seeing the ad for Daikatana in PC Gamer back in the day.

At least Ion Storm's Austin office gave us Deus Ex.
They also gave us Dominion, the best/worst Command and Conquer ripoff.

I'll have to check that book out. Another good book kind of along that same line is Game Over. It follows the video game industry from its inception up through the release of the SNES and Sega Genesis. Gives very in-depth looks at the inner workings of both Atari and Nintendo of America, and tells the story of how the former built the home gaming market and then almost killed it, and how the latter resuscitated it. Really a fascinating read if you can find a copy.
