Just a friendly tip: When you meet Dusk of Oolacile...purchase the Cast Light spell from her. It will be the best decision you made in one particular are of this game

Depends on how much you value 20k souls
There are ways around it but its a bit of a pain. Not necessarily difficult. Just takes longer. But also, that's an excellent area to farm for souls. Like 7k souls in 2-3 minutes. Idk if you can open the door from the other side. I assume you can.

I took your hint to mean the dragon had to be below or behind it. I figured the best way to start would be to swing away. Lol without your hint about the chest I probably never would have found it.

It's actually required at one point to continue the game. So I'd buy it sooner rather than later for the reasons Saint already described.

Sen's Fortress,the building across the long bridge from the bonfire at Andre the blacksmith, should probably be you next objective and that will also take you to Anor Londo for multiple surprises.
