Can you clarify what a “free” Wow server is? There isn’t any free to play version right?

I am just floored at the thought of how someone got the backend software to do this. I don’t totally know the architecture of a mmo, but pirating the server software seems pretty crazy.

You can find pirated servers for just about any mmo. But yeah it's nuts

It’s a private server. Goes up to wrath of the lich king which in my opinion is the best iteration of the game. Google dalaran wow. No sub required.

It's pretty easy to find the server software for WOW with a little torrent searching. I setup a Classic WOW server just for myself about a year ago for nostalgia sake. It was neat returning to the game for the first time and revisiting old locations I remember hanging out with friends in.
However, it also felt really weird and kind of sad wandering between towns knowing you'd never run into another random player to join up with on a quest you had in common or to be in Iron Forge and have it be totally empty. I remember the game chugging severely every time I visited the auction house there back during WOW's heydey.
Anyway, messing around with it for a few hours scratched my Classic WOW itch and prevented me from resubbing with Blizzard.
