I have NO idea what specs I need. Is it better to build one? Do I need a degree to do it? Is it easier than building a rifle?

For a frame of reference, I would like the specs to play BF3 at the highest possible settings. I need this broken down Barney style if possible.

Let me get dat shite fo $1,000.

TIA

You can get a pretty high end gaming PC for $1000....but if you need an OS, keyboard, mouse, monitor...that's going to cut into your budget a good bit.

Definitely

Do I need a degree to do it?

Probably some help to get the correct hardware together to make sure everything is compatible

It's easier than building shitty buildings with legos

I'm assuming the days are gone of actually being able to compete with a standard model Dell?

Like can I have an average at best computer, running the lowest graphics possible, and still be able to consistently be good? I see these BF3 screen shots, and I just can't imagine a normal computer being able to remotely keep up with the framerate of an Alienware.

Google search "toms hardware". That site should provide some guidance.

Alienware is overpriced anyway, but still better than an average Dell.

Not sure what this means. You or the fluidity of the game?

Lowest settings on PC is pretty much the equivalent to consoles. I play max res on ultra settings and it's night and day from low settings. So just an average computer wouldn't be able to play on those settings, no.

Can't think of anything that isn't.

But really, you throw a number out on what you want to spend (on either just the build or the whole thing with OS/mouse/keyboard/monitor), and there are people here that can help you out. They probably google anyway though.

You're going to need a little know how to put together, but everything you'll need is available online. Plenty of how-to guides can be found if you Google "how to build a computer".

For $1,000, you can build a top notch gaming PC. But the first things you need to figure out are which base system do you want to go with. The two main ones are Intel and AMD. This decision will determine the type of Mother Board and Processor you'll want to get.

Once you have that down, everything will build from there. I highly recommend looking at Newegg.com for custom bundles put together by other computer builders to get an idea of what you'll need.

Building your own computer is the cheapest way to get a gaming PC these days. Good luck!

Should I just aim for whatever BF3 recommends for their ultra settings? As far as parts are concerned?

Alienware is retardedly expensive when you compare it to what you can build yourself.

Last year I built.

2600K unlocked
ASUS motherboard
8 Gigs Ram
128 gig SSD for OS & most used programs
1.5 TB HD
2 X Radeon 6970 running in Crossfire
1000W Power Supply
DVD drive
Case

for under $1400. I don't have part numbers as I'm at work right now but I went with highly recommeded parts.

Here is a guide to building it your self from Tom's hardware. LINK

Like others have said just the PC itself isn't that expensive to build a pretty high end one. It gets pricey with your monitor, speakers, headphones, etc.

One thing I do suggest is not to skimp on the power supply for the CPU, you can find a bunch of cheap arse ones, but are usually crappy and can have fluctuations of power to your PC.

Not sure what they recommend.

Do you have a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and OS or is that going to need to be included in the $1000?

I'll add that later. I just wanted to get the PC. I'm guessing an HDTV wouln't be the way to go for a monitor...

This x1000

I think Tom's did a article on systems specifically for playing BF3. Just know that if you do not already have a monitor its going really cut into your budget (unless you get a shitty small monitor)

Dont play under 1080p resolution

Hardcore gamers start at HDTV resolutions. We have been playing at those for quite some time. Thats your entry level.

If you can get an OS for free it will allow you to spend more on VC/processor or more RAM.

I'd imagine that would take away from your frame rate as opposed to a 23" monitor, but I really have no idea.
