I won an auction and I got two OptiPlex one is a 3060 and the other is 3070 both booted into bios and both have I5-8400 and both came with 256 gig SSD M.2. No other hard drives but the both have 16 gig of DDR4 ram.

I'm looking to upgrade my current desktop which is a XPS with the 4790 non k. I have a 1650 super GPU and 650 PSU. I figured I would need a new MOBO and I'm looking at Z370 or Z390 so I can use 8 or 9th gen CPU.

I'm also cheap as hell and looking to spend as little has possible. I currently only play HLL which my 4790 is at 100 utilization at the lowest settings.

My question is should I just find a cheap non dell MOBO that can run the 8400 or should I spend a lil extra on getting a little more "current" I can get the z370 and 8700k for about 157$. Should bother upgrading the CPU at the same time?

You kind of need to answer your own tacit question: are you content with that level of performance or are you willing to pay for more. If yes, how much more?No one can make that call for you.

I'm willing to pay about 157 if the performance is worth it lol. I tried looking at CPU bench mark and they say the 8400 is about the same as the 4790 but I also read those website cannot always be trusted.

Admittedly, I am a novice at PC builds so I'm also not sure that going for 8700k would be smart. I know its not top of the line but the 9900k is kind of nuts price wise for a dead socket.

If my PC bite the dust then I'll get it but I don't want to spend money on a marginal increase If there is no need.
