I could never understand why my friends kept trying to push this game on to me especially since we had Mario Kart. Guess I just missed it because I know lots of people love this game.

DKR was of course just a mario kart clone but it mixed things up with boats and planes, which became common place now but at the time no other cart racer had multiple vehicle types.
Plus it had some "boss fight" races which were pretty cool. The final race against Whiz Pig is ridiculously hard for a kid's game.

My memory of it is slow and boring, but it could have just been me doing anything to keep my friends from replacing Mario Kart in our rotation. I was kind of a dick any time they popped it in.

If you play Mario Party you def. want to ease up on the control stick rotation mini-games. Nintendo dropped them after MP1 because kids were getting blisters on their palms, but that motion also tears up the stick faster than any.

MP1 is the only one when you get into that type of mini game a ton.
Another reason MP2 and MP3 are a better choice.
Edt: The HS GF of 6yrs loved MP3, but the current GF of 10yrs loves MP2. Always crossing the memories up and getting into trouble.
