This is definitely true--you see much less demand for out of season produce in Italy, though it's certainly there. It's just that people are more cognizant of what's local and what's imported, and they're willing to pay more for the perceived "good" stuff. Industrial agriculture certainly exists, but so does support for small farmers & traditional producers. The USA has zero, zip, zilch for small producers.

You have to find hole in the walls hat locals eat at... get off the beaten path.... spent 3 weeks.there backpacking in my 20’s.... Rome, Venice, Lugano Switzerland, Piedmont, cinque terra, Florence, mt Vesuvius, Capri, then back to Rome. Best food were hole in the walls... and the 36 ounce steak I ate in Florence.
