The patent lapsed. Patent law changed, requiring periodic payments to keep your patent in force. Unfortunately, my buddy's lawyer died, so there was nobody to tell him he needed to start making the payments.

He had talked to Dexter-Russell (maker of the ubiquitous white plastic-handled knife), but they weren't too interested. He bought his blades from them.
