Does anyone remember the Verbena Bakery in Gentilly? This would be in the 1950's??? Used to go there as a little fellow of 5 or 6 years old. Probably 'Ain't Dere No Mo', anyone have any memory of it? Nod store front, just in the basement of a house on Verbena ST. in Gentilly. Had a big vat of grease in the basement they would drop donuts, then pour that melted glaze all over......think that is where Krispy Kreme got the idea from LOL.

I do. I was in my early 20's when I discovered that place back in the mid 70's. You could walk down the driveway to the back where they made the donuts and I'd hit them up for a dozen or more at 0'dark thirty and it was a cash and carry business mom and pop operation.
Great donuts made out of a house on Verbena St.
ETA: Another favorite of mine from that neighborhood was Arts Bar on the corner of Clematis and Arts St.
A buddy and I got into the jogging craze back then and we'd often do either 5,7 or 10 mile runs and would head to Arts when we finished our cool down walk. They had some good cold beer and great prices. It was a great neighborhood bar.

Remember it well, lived with girlfriend (now bride) on Jonquil, couple doors away. Always remember the S&WB crews would stop there before deploying right at 7 a.m. in the morning, I suppose they were getting coffee LOL. Woman who ran it was a german, and when I tell you she would not put up with any baloney in that bar, I mean it. Gentilly was a great little neighborhood. I think Arts was on Clematis and Jonquil though.
