Is this just something you need to do enough to start enjoying it, or do you never truly "enjoy" the coffee? How long should I expect before I start preferring black to sweetened beverages?

as others have recommended, give the french press or pour over (like a chemex) a try with freshly roasted and freshly ground beans. that is where you will notice a difference. a fancy machine with crappy, stale, grocery store beans = crappy coffee.

you could also use a cold-brew coffee maker (like a toddy coffee maker) that does fantastic iced or hot coffee. try a moka pot (they're like 25 bucks and will last forever) for something more robust - bordering on espresso. and then give straight espresso a try. i think the subtleties come out on a short espresso more than any other coffee beverage.

How can you tell if someone prefers their coffee black?

Don't worry, they'll tell you before you ask.

Yep. The reason I only use my french press at work and not home is because we have an electric kettle here. It is one that has a digital readout that tells you the temperature of the water. I need to get one for the house, but just haven't pulled the trigger.

Aim for between 195-200 degrees, then pour, wait 4m30s and press.
