Thanks again, everyone.
To the extent that anyone cares, I used about 20% of what I had thought was a failed experiment as the base for a couple of gallons of 7-bean and rice stew/soup, adding onion, garlic, guajillo, hungarian paprika, chipotle, thyme, oregano, sage and a few other odds-and-ends.
It is delicious, so I suppose the experiment was not a failure after all.
