It does have a bitter taste as some people have mentioned, but so does tea and coffee and people use these as marinades all the time. I like to use steens with Worcestershire, cracked black pepper, cayenne, spices etc... to marinate pork in. Comes out good for slow cooking.

People usually don't like Steen's because they don't know how to use it; this is the case with most unliked foods.

Growing up in N.O. I was never exposed to Steen's. Now that I've been living in B.R. I have and its a bit strong for my taste, to put straight on anything ie: bisquits, cornbread, etc...

However with that being said, it certainly is great to cook with, marinades, pies, etc..

But then again, for me that's the same way I feel about Tobasco sauce.

I love the stuff, personally. It has such a raw, natural taste to it. I use it in a lot of things that I make... and gateau sirop cake is awesome...

Huh, I have lived my entire life in NO and Steen's was the only syrup in the house.

Well I guess it all depends on whether your parents were raised with, mine obviously weren't.

I've eaten b-fast at lotta places in N.O. rarely ever see it offered as an option for maple syrup. Not saying no one does offer it, but off the top of my head I don't recall any places that I visit when i'm in town.

Agreed. I wish it were not true, but its not a table item on most restaurants in the NOLA area. I think this is purely a function of lack of distribution points and they are not very innovative with their packaging either... success in food service requires these.
