What makes this one better than those that seem to do the same thing and are less than half the price?

The marketing tends to rely on thermocouple vs thermistor for the function. I own one and love it. It's very fast, very accurate, the probe is very small and thin and it is extremely solid construction. That said, it's probably a bit of a luxury item when it comes to home cook thermometers. I have one, love it and will eagerly buy another if it ever dies.
