We planted an orange tree on my in laws property (plaquemine point) and it's too far for me to cover it up every night and uncover it before work. I'm not going to ask them to do it for me either. What options do I have? When the hard freeze comes am I better off leaving it covered for a few nights/days or just let it fight the weather by itself?

My dad puts bags of mulch down around the base of the citrus trees that are too big to cover. You could try that.

It really has to get really cold for it to matter. You need a ground freeze. Thats why putting mulch on it helps because it holds heat.

That's what I wanted to hear. I'll put some more mulch on it and let it ride through the winter.

Its got to be in the teens to really worry about that. I'm not doing anything to mine this week because its not even going to be freezing.

Me either, just prepping. It's a young tree that was planted in April. Maybe 3.5 ft high. Want to make sure it gets through it's first winter in the ground.

I'll prob cover it with mulch (out of the bag) and water it well a day or two before the first hard freeze.
