Does anyone know what ever happened to this place? The story I always heard was that the owner was retiring and sold the place to his son, which ran Portobellos. Was there any more to add to that, did he ever reopen elsewhere or is he still retired?

I was just feeling a little nostalgic today, 10 years ago I dropped to a knee at a corner table there and asked for Mrs. Fly's hand. After nearly choking on her food, she said yes. The owner (terrible I know but I can't remember his name at the moment) walked up to congratulate us and brought us a bottle of champagne on the house. It was the perfect end to a perfect night, and summed up why we loved it there so much. I realize there may have been more romantic date night spots in Baton Rouge, but to two broke college kids it was 5 star dining and "our place."

I believe the owner's name was Ken (Kiva was his son). Ken basically ran the Village for Ms Fanny. Can't remember exactly how it went down but when Joe Distafano shut down Jack Sabins he went to the Village and think that is when Ken left and opened Kiva's on Airline.

I worked there for two years near the end of its realm but left before it closed. Mr. Ken Guidros (Spellcheck) was the owner and the restaurant was named after his son, Kiva (Kiva runs all the Portobellos as mentioned before). Mr. Ken was there pretty much every night, but was nearing the age of being ready to retire, and hired a new manager to help run the place so he could begin taking more time off.

The new manager came in and revamped the whole place, new paint, carpet, décor, etc. and even began trying to change some of Mr. Ken's recipes from what I remember. I distinctly remember the new manager trying to change the recipe of the red sauce, and had a pot of it cooked in the kitchen. Mr. Ken unexpectedly showed up and dipped a spoon in the red sauce for a quality/taste check and immediately noticed it wasn't his recipe and dumped the entire pot out in the trash.

I left during this transition period but it was obvious that Mr. Ken was not happy with the changes that were being made to his place, many without his consent. The restaurant had many old timer regular customers who I also believe felt the same way. I can only assume that Mr. Ken eventually got fed up, and while also being ready to retire, decided to either give or sell the place to his son Kiva and wash his hands of it.

I still enjoy returning to the Portobellos in that location and reliving the good memories I had working there. I always thought Kiva's had excellent Italian food and I find many of the recipes that Portobellos serve have a similar taste to what was served at Kiva's
