Respectfully have to disagree here. If you have a modicum of kitchen skill and a small compressor style ice cream maker and can read a recipe, you can control your own ingredients and make something that is better than the mass produced stuff. May not top small artisan shops, but will way outdo the supermarket freezer case stuff.

Start by learning to make a fior de latte (sweet cream) gelato and perfect that, then turn that into stracciatella, then move on from there. The fior de latte is also a perfect base for a vanilla version.
