Jackson, MS - Steakhouses - Char/Shapleys

Been to both Char and Shapley's.....only did Char once - didnt care much for it, so have been visiting Shapleys when in town. I have always said Shapleys was the best steak in town.
A friend really likes Char, and another mentioned it today.....so I decided to give it another shot this evening.
Walked in and sat at the bar.....asked for a wine list and a menu....bartender suggested a wine and proceeded to tell me "we recently changed our menu and how we cook steaks." Really? Do tell. "We no longer chargrill. Two weeks ago, we purchased a broiler.....and now serve Allen Brothers meat."
Aight. Im feelin better already.
Had a glass of PN and Cab.....cup of gumbo (because I always do), wedge salad, and the cowboy ribeye with sauteed asparagus.
Folks, Jackson now has a steakhouse. Below was my very well worth the price $33 entree.

good to know. jackson has an incredible list of wonderful steakhouses. my favorites would include shapleys, nick's, walker's, local 463, parlor market, tico's, ruth's chris, and ely's. i wouldn't have even put char on the list so i'm glad they've improved.

Although they may all sell steaks....they are not all steakhouses. IMHO, Jackson essentially has 3. Shapleys, Char, Ruths. (4 if you count Tico's. I have no plan to return).
Ruths has never been really consistant (to me) in Ridgeland. I quit going.
Char never impressed me until tonight.
Shapleys....I settled on it being the best....after a half a dozen trips.
Have never been impressed with steaks in Jackson. Char did a really good job tonight tho. I will return on my next trip in the coming weeks.

why would you consider shapley's or char steakhouses but not nick's or walker's? i agree, all of them serve food other than steaks.
eta: ely's is owned by a shapley and has a very similar menu. you might as well consider it one also.

I agree. It's owned by Richard Shapley and the steaks are excellent. As well as the sides. I also agree on Tico's. Haven't been back. I've not been in a while, but Huntington's Grille next to the Hilton used to have some really good steaks.
Good to hear about Char. Usually just stop by for drinks and some piano music in the bar, but I'll definitely try them again for a steak. I hate to see that they've taken the pork belly app off of the menu.

My list there was Shapleys, Kathryns, Char
I'm not a big fan of Ticos especially when these places are in the area.

Not being a jerk here, but why would you call those places a steakhouse? Because they have a steak on the menu?
When I refer to a steakhouse, my intentions are a restrnt that features its menu and wine list around red meat. Flemings, Morton's, Ruths', Sullivans, Del Frisco's, Donovan's, Spencer's, etc (to name some well known steakhouse chains).
Regardless, Char stepped up their quality.
