grill?

I swear I heard some of them call it a starter. It just looks like a stainless still stick about 8" long and is chained to their grill. What is the function of this device?

thanks. It looked clearly like a stick of metal so I was confused how it could be some kind of electric igniter. That makes a lot more sense.
