I think it’s the pinch of Copenhagen that makes it different from regular coffee

Coffee grounds are boiled along with the water, then filtered out. It is an acquired taste, very bitter and “stewed” verging on acrid,

Cowboy coffee is coffee grounds directly in the water to come to a boil. Then a pinch of salt is added and egg shells tossed in to settle the grounds to the bottom of the pot.
Appetizing, isn't it????
ETA: My grandma, an old Cajun lady use to do something similar. She'd add coffee grounds to her water, bring it to a low boil and shut the fire off to let it steep. Then she'd pour that into one of those old time white porcelain coffee pots with a hunk of cheesecloth to catch the grinds.
Then she'd put the coffee pot over one of the pilot lights on the old stove and on the other pilot light she'd have a small pot of milk staying hot.
To make her coffee, she'd put her cup in the middle of the stove and pour equal amounts of coffee and hot milk for a cup of café au lait.

All that stuff was necessary when coffee was shite. Robusto beans and probably really old. There’s no reason for any of that now. Get a grinder for $20 and buy good local fresh roasted beans.

You gotta boil the shot out of it and add a little cold water at end to settle the grinds

Watch Kent Rollins YouTube video on how he makes it. Its easy to do and alot smoother then you would think.
