Look into Wilma avocado tree. They can take more cold and heat. I planted one at my house in Houston before I moved. They get to 20'x20' like a fig tree.

Unless you have an extremely protected yet still sunny spot, you won't get fruit. Sure, you might get a nice tree. But avocados are very tender; most will be killed outright by 25-30 degree temps. There is a big one on Prytania near Melpomene in NOLA that fruits prolifically....but it is growing very close to a house. Seen a few others in LA with similar sheltered locations that actually fruited.

And it will take from 5-15 years to bear the first fruit. And never grow an avocado from the seed from a store bought one.

Always thought about sprouting one from a seed. No good?

It's fun for kids to stick toothpicks in and grow a tree-- Sort of like doing the same with a sweet potato.

It is a common misconception that avocados are diecious; that is, that a tree is either male or female. They are monecious, whereby both sex organs are on one flower. There is avoidance for any given tree to self pollinate. TMI for this discussion. So, the bottom line is that if you want to get a avocado tree, buy one that is grafted to a different tree’s rootstock.

Are you telling me where I can go steal avocados? That's frowned upon.

They can but it is hard. My family has killed 5 so far. We are pretty much done trying.

My dad's got big too. Never any fruit so he was glad when the freeze killed it.

If you really want to try, go to this guy... LINK but then again we have bought most of ours from him and no dice.

They are slightly less freeze tolerant than citrus trees. I remember some trees in the past that made it four or five years and got zapped by temperatures in the low '20s or teens. This is where having them next to a big house and near a south wall helps. Or get a really big tarp... .

I figured I would keep it in a BIG pot/barrel so it couldn't get too big and then I would just cover it w/ a tarp or big blanket during cold weather?

Might just work. They don't really big like oaks.
