I've only done the after-parties or wakes.
People all bring some dip or casserole, I show up with $150 of Popeyes and a case of beer and it's gone in an hour while the casseroles sit on the counter.

my family is Italian so perhaps this is not the same everywhere but I’ve never been to a wake that didn’t have lasagna on the table

I went to a funeral in Pierre Part recently. Large magnalite pot with Chicken & Rice. Whole chicken, head, feet, all of it. It was delicious and fed 20 people.

Just stay away from serving a tray of lady fingers, a candy dish of Lifesavers, and a Rest in Peas salad.
